Inbal is a wonderful choice, and as you said he is also a noted Mahler interpreter. At moment though I don't like much about EdW's Mahler -- he made it so polished and remote. Among your list there are a lot of "non-Mahlerians," which I agree that maybe they can lead the orchestra to explore more in depth in other composers other than Mahler and Strauss.

Well Dennis I am sure you would agree the main criteria for selecting next music director includes top artistic qualities and international renown. My favourite/dream choice would be Eliahu Inbal. He will step down the Czech Philharmonic in 2012 when Jiří Bělohlávek takes over. His other post with Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra can continue alongside. Like Edo de Waart, Inbal is one of the best Mahler interpreters, has a wide range of repertoire and is noted an opera conductor as well.

Other notable candidates in my long list are:
Michel Plasson
Libor Pešek (conducted HKPO several times before)
Ion Marin (have conducted HKPO several times before)
Stéphane Denève (conducted HKPO in 2006 and 2010)
Jakub Hrůša (have conducted HKPO in 2008)
Osmo Vänskä (have conducted HKPO in 2006)
Jun Märkl
Ingo Metzmacher

Of course as you mention why not consider young conductors like Dmitri Jurowski. He is a good choice - well let see how he performs in the upcoming HKPO concert. I am happy to settle with Alexander Lazarev over Jaap van Zweden. What do you think of Eliahu Inbal?

There's always a balance to strike between artistic excellence and budget. To me it's more saddening to see that EdW lost support from the board in spending for the calibre that he demanded. I don't know if M8 is ever on table or if he has asked chips for this, but certainly he has lost the motivation to stage this and to complete the cycle. So we now got a birthday cake baked without the candles...

Well, it's a shame! If an amateur orchestra managed to perform M8 with an acceptable performance, I fail to see why it has to be professional choirs.

It was 7 years before Inkinen conducted the HKPO for the first time "suddenlly". He was replaced from Maestro Tadaaki Otaka because of Otaka's illness. After then Inkinen invited the HKPO again however his conduct was replaced because of his illness. Inkinen is a principal guest conductor of the Japan Phil. now.

I don't remember if I have seen him before with the HKPO -- so must not be something spectacular in my memory. But his Sibelius disc is remarkable and the NZSO sounds simply marvellous and can easily be said as their "signature piece." Somehow more impressive than Sydney SO under Ashkenazy.

Inkinen is also my favorite conductor! He conducted the HKPO several years before and I heard his DSCH Sym.5 & was impressed very much. I did not know his name at all before he came to HK. As you know he is good work in NZ & easy to imagine just hearing his Sibelius cycles by NAXOS.
