BBC Proms announced with focuses on choral works and other unusual things

The web is abuzz with the announcement of BBC Proms 2011. With the expected flood of music by anniversary composers like Franz Liszt and Gustav Mahler, there is something new in the horizon.

Among those new things is the first ever Comedy Prom by musician, actor, comedian and rock ’n roll superstar Tim Minchin.

A DJ, with the turntable as his solo instrument, will premiere a concerto with National Youth Orchestra written by Gabriel Prokofiev. Mr. Prokofiev is the grandson of the Sergei, and he prefers a pub to a concert hall.

One big choral work is featured on every Sunday, and the Proms decides to celebrate my birthday with Havergal Brian’s Gothic Symphony, notably the largest symphony written at all time.

Lang Lang will be playing at the Last Night of the Proms for the first time. Yuja Wang will also have her Proms début.

Proms website too difficult to read? Look at all concerts in one [sic] glance.
