The South China Morning Post reports the Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden is “a leading candidate to take over from compatriot Edo de Waart as artistic director and chief conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.”
It also says that the conductor will be coming to Hong Kong next month for a private session with the musicians, gathering supports.
Also rumoured to be on the shortlist is Alexander Lazarev, who has conducted the HKPO in a glorious (in my opinion) Shostakovich Symphony No. 11 last year. He is also due to come to conduct the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in the upcoming Hong Kong Arts Festival.
The other candidate mentioned in the newspaper is German conductor Andreas Delfs.
